Built in the dugout, not a boardroom

Who's on Second started the way most coaching tools should: with a real coach, a messy spreadsheet, and a problem that wouldn't go away.

The spreadsheet era

For three seasons of Little League, the lineup process looked the same. A spreadsheet with too many tabs. A set of league rules printed out and paper-clipped to a clipboard. Thirty minutes in the parking lot before every game, trying to make sure nobody sat twice in a row and no pitcher threw too many innings.

It worked. Mostly. Until it didn't. A parent would ask why their player sat two games in a row. The spreadsheet said otherwise, but the spreadsheet was wrong because someone forgot to update it after a rain-shortened game three weeks ago. Sound familiar?

When the spreadsheet wasn't enough

After 18 years building software and systems professionally, the itch was impossible to ignore. The spreadsheet had all the right ideas: track who played where, enforce rest days, balance playing time across the season. But spreadsheets don't warn you when a pitcher needs rest. They don't generate a fair lineup in two taps. They don't give you something to hand a parent who questions your decisions.

So the spreadsheet became a prototype. The prototype became a product. And the rules that used to live in a printed PDF became a configurable engine that actually enforces them for you.

What we believe

Every player deserves a fair shot.

The lineup algorithm optimizes for equal playing time and position variety. Fairness isn't a feature we bolted on. It's the reason the product exists.

Your data belongs to you.

No ads. No data selling. No tracking cookies. You pay a fair price, we build a great product. That's the whole deal.

Built for the dugout, not a desk.

We test on phones in the sun, not monitors in an office. If it doesn't work one-handed while you're holding a clipboard, it's not done.
